Opening the glass kiln is a moment of excitement and trepidation.
Looking at my website photos of finished pieces, it is possible to think that every glass project ends in success. The reality, as every ceramicist and glass artist knows, is that kiln forming can throw allsorts of problems in ones way! It is always a moment of drama when the kiln is opened after each firing.
I’m currently working on new pieces for an Exhibition inspired by the works of William de Morgan, and the photo above shows my new Sunflower bowl in the kiln. Tragedy; the glass has cracked across the top and the fragment has displaced by over 1 cm.
There is no satisfactory way of ‘mending’ this piece, but it is important that I work out what might have caused the break to avoid repeated disasters on future glass fusings.
